The Commons Car Park Reconstruction

Harborough District Council
Infrastructure

About the Project

The Commons Car Park is one of Market Harborough’s largest central car parks providing over 350 parking spaces for both shoppers and businesses.

After extensive consultation with users and the local community a design was developed by the council and approved for construction in early 2008. The final design involved:

  • Reconstruction of the existing car park.
  • Demolition of the existing footbridge.
  • Provision of block paved walkways to make the car park safer for pedestrians.
  • Installation of railings & street furniture.
  • Provision of an extensive street lighting scheme and ducting for CCTV equipment.

Being a high profile site in the centre of the town, careful project planning was required to minimise disruption to local community and ensure the safety of members of the public throughout the construction phase.

Works were divided into two phases so that at anyone time only half of the car park was unavailable for use. Use of our in-house mobile crushing facilities to process excavated hard material for reuse on site minimised the environmental impacts of lorry movements and reduced the need to import virgin aggregates.
